Yamaha Jet Drive Outboards

Yamaha's jet drive outboards eliminate the propeller entirely, replacing it with an internal impeller system that draws water in and expels it at high pressure for thrust. The result is a motor that can operate in extremely shallow water, navigate rock-strewn rivers, and eliminate the risk of propeller strike in environments where a conventional outboard would be unusable or dangerous.

In BC and Alberta, jet drive outboards are the motor of choice for interior river fishing — the Thompson, the Chilcotin, the Peace, and the dozens of fast, shallow systems that are simply inaccessible to prop-driven boats.

Jet drive advantages:

Operate in water as shallow as a few inches
No propeller — eliminates strike risk in shallow, rocky rivers
Handles debris, gravel bars, and river conditions that destroy conventional lower units

Jet drive trade-offs: Jet drive motors are less fuel-efficient at speed than propeller-driven equivalents and have lower top-end performance. They are purpose-built for shallow water environments, not open-water performance. If your application involves open water or deep lakes, a standard F-series motor is the correct choice.
