The Yamaha factory warranty is one of the strongest in the outboard industry — but it's only as good as who you bought the motor from. This is a plain-language breakdown of what Yamaha's warranty covers in Canada, what voids it, and why authorized dealer purchase is non-negotiable.
The Coverage
Yamaha's current Canadian warranty for recreational outboard motors provides three years of factory coverage on new units for defects in materials and workmanship. This covers the engine, internal components, fuel delivery systems, and electrical systems under normal use conditions.
Coverage is through Yamaha Motor Canada's authorized dealer network. Warranty work is performed by authorized Yamaha service dealers, who submit claims directly to Yamaha Canada.
What Voids the Warranty
This is the part most buyers skip — and then regret.
Grey market purchase. If you buy a Yamaha outboard from a US dealer, a private US seller, or any unauthorized source and bring it into Canada, Yamaha Canada will not honour the warranty. The motor is registered to the US market. This is not a technicality — it is a hard policy enforced consistently. We see this come up regularly when customers try to save money buying stateside, and it never ends well.
Unauthorized dealer. Purchasing from a seller who is not an authorized Yamaha dealer — including some online marketplaces — voids the warranty from the point of sale. The motor may be physically identical, but the warranty registration process requires an authorized dealer transaction to be valid.
Improper installation. Yamaha requires that motors be installed by a qualified marine technician. DIY installation by a non-certified person is grounds for warranty denial if a claim arises and installation is found to be the cause.
Incorrect fuel. Yamaha four-strokes require clean, fresh fuel meeting the specifications in the owner's manual. Ethanol content above the rated threshold, contaminated fuel, or incorrect oil in the crankcase voids relevant coverage.
Neglected service intervals. Yamaha's maintenance schedule exists for a reason. Missed break-in service (required at 20 hours on new motors), skipped annual service, or failure to maintain cooling water and impeller intervals are all ways to weaken or void a claim.
The Break-In Service
Every new Yamaha outboard requires a break-in service at 20 hours of operation. This is not optional. It involves an oil change, inspection of critical wear components, and verification of torque specs after initial heat cycling. It must be performed by an authorized Yamaha service dealer to keep the warranty intact.
When you buy from us, we'll remind you of this at point of sale and can help you locate the nearest authorized service dealer for your area.
Why Authorized Dealer Purchase Is the Only Way
We are an authorized Canadian Yamaha marine dealer. Every motor we sell is Canadian-market inventory, registered through Yamaha Motor Canada's system, and fully covered under the factory warranty from day one.
If you're comparing our price to a US source and thinking the savings outweigh the risk — they don't. The warranty alone on a $10,000–$25,000 outboard motor is worth more than the price difference. And if you ever have a warranty claim denied because of a grey market purchase, you'll wish you'd bought Canadian.
