Saskatchewan and Manitoba are home to some of the best freshwater fishing in North America. Tobin Lake, Waskesiu, Emma Lake, Waskana, Lake Winnipeg, Lake of the Prairies, Riding Mountain — these waters hold walleye, pike, perch, and lake trout that draw serious anglers from across the country every season.
Prairie fishing has its own character: large, shallow, wind-exposed lakes that can turn rough quickly, remote access via trailer, HP restrictions on many smaller lakes, and a fishing culture built around aluminum boats and reliable four-stroke motors. Here’s how to match the right Yamaha outboard to the conditions.
Small Lake Fishing — 12–16 Foot Aluminum Tiller Boats
Recommended: Yamaha F9.9 or F15
Many smaller Saskatchewan and Manitoba lakes — particularly in provincial parks and protected watersheds — carry 10hp or under HP restrictions. The F9.9 is the most popular motor in this application across the prairies: it meets the 10hp restriction, gets a 14-foot aluminum on plane cleanly, and is light enough to car-top or trailer without drama.
The F15 is the right call on unrestricted lakes where you want a bit more push — especially useful on Saskatchewan’s wind-exposed lakes where headwind performance matters. The difference between the F9.9 and F15 is meaningful when you’re running back to the ramp into a south wind on an open prairie lake.
Mid-Size Lake Fishing — 16–19 Foot Aluminum
Recommended: Yamaha F40, F60, or F70
For larger Saskatchewan and Manitoba lakes — Tobin Lake, Emma Lake, Last Mountain, Lake Manitoba — a 16–19 foot aluminum fishing boat is the standard platform. These are big, open waters that demand enough motor to handle wind chop and load the boat without running at the ceiling.
The F40 is the right spec for a standard 16-foot aluminum rated to 40hp. It gets the boat on plane cleanly and runs efficiently at trolling speeds. The F60 and F70 are the right step up for heavier 17–18 foot hulls or any setup where you’re regularly running two anglers plus gear on open water. On a windy day on Lake Winnipeg or Tobin Lake, having a 60hp or 70hp where 40hp would suffice on a calm day is a real safety and comfort difference.
Walleye Tournament and Dedicated Fishing Boats — 17–20 Foot
Recommended: Yamaha F90 or F115
Saskatchewan and Manitoba have active walleye tournament circuits, and dedicated tournament and guide boats in the 17–20 foot class need proper power. The F90 is the correct spec for lighter hulls in this range rated to 100hp. The F115 is Yamaha’s most popular motor in Canada for good reason — it covers the widest range of hull types in this class and delivers excellent fuel economy at the trolling speeds walleye fishing demands.
For Manitoba’s larger platforms — 18–20 foot purpose-built walleye boats with livewells, rod lockers, and console setups — the F115 is the benchmark motor. It’s reliable, fuel-efficient, and proven across thousands of boats running Canadian prairie conditions.
River Fishing — Saskatchewan River, Assiniboine, Winnipeg River
Recommended: Standard prop or jet drive depending on depth
The river systems across Saskatchewan and Manitoba vary significantly in depth and character. On navigable, deeper stretches — the lower Saskatchewan River, the Winnipeg River, the Red — a standard propeller-driven motor is fine and more efficient. The F40 or F60 in standard configuration handles these applications well.
On shallower river systems with gravel bars, braided channels, and variable depth — particularly in northern Saskatchewan and Manitoba where rivers run fast and rocky — jet drive is the correct choice. Yamaha’s F40 Jet Drive and F60 Jet Drive eliminate propeller strike risk entirely and let you run water that prop boats can’t access safely.
Kicker Motor for Trolling — Walleye and Lake Trout
Recommended: Yamaha T9.9
Trolling is a primary technique for walleye on Saskatchewan and Manitoba’s larger lakes, and a dedicated kicker motor makes a significant difference in presentation control. The correct motor for this application is the Yamaha T9.9 High Thrust — not the standard F9.9.
The T9.9 High Thrust uses a larger gear case and lower gear ratio purpose-built for controlled low-speed operation. It holds a precise trolling speed in wind and chop far better than a standard portable outboard, which matters on open prairie lakes where wind is a constant factor. For a kicker on a Saskatchewan or Manitoba walleye boat, the T9.9 is the right choice.
A Note on HP Restrictions in Saskatchewan and Manitoba
Both provinces have HP restrictions on a significant number of lakes, particularly in provincial parks and protected areas. Saskatchewan’s regulations vary by water body — common restrictions are 10hp, 25hp, and 40hp limits depending on the lake. Manitoba has similar provisions across its park lakes and sensitive fisheries.
Before purchasing, confirm the HP regulations on the specific waters you fish most. Check with Saskatchewan Environment and Climate Change or Manitoba Conservation for current restrictions. Spec your motor correctly the first time.
